Sonography CanadaThe credentialling body and national voice for diagnostic medical sonographers in Canada. Sonography Canada administers entry-to-practice credentialling examinations.

Certification

To work as a diagnostic medical sonographer in BC you must have:

  • Current certification with Sonography Canada and/or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or be eligible for membership with Sonography Canada and/or ARDMS.
  • If applying for a position in a speciality practice area, you must obtain credentials/certification in the speciality area with Sonography Canada and/or ARDMS.
  • Graduated from an accredited program in diagnostic medical sonography

Obtaining Sonography Canada Credentials

Sonographers applying for Sonography Canada registration may receive their credentials in the following specialties:

  • CRGS Canadian Registered Generalist Sonographer (Core and Generalist)
  • CRCS Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (Core and Cardiac)
  • CRVS Canadian Registered Vascular Sonographer (Core and Vascular)

Accredited program applicants have graduated from a Canadian sonography program accredited by Accreditation Canada and have successfully completed the Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment (CCSA) as part of their practicum. Following graduation, candidates are required to complete the Sonography Canada written examination for which they wish to obtain credential(s).

Alternate Applicant Pathway – Internationally Educated Sonographers

The Alternate Pathway is for those individuals who are internationally credentialed or trained sonography professionals from outside Canada.

These applicants may submit an Alternate Pathway Application  to initiate the process and become certified with Sonography Canada. If approved, candidates may move forward with the credentialing process – the knowledge-based examinations and Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment (CCSA).

Once you have completed all the required exams, you will receive your Sonography Canada credential.

English Language Fluency (Optional Recommendation)

 If English is not your first language and you plan to take the Sonography Canada exams in English, Sonography Canada recommends that you complete a language fluency test. A list of suggested tests is available at sonographycanada.ca.

Please note that submitting proof of language fluency is not required to be eligible for the exams. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your English skills are sufficient before attempting the exams.
