Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs)
Governing Bodies
Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) – The national professional association and certifying body for medical radiation technologists across Canada.
Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists – British Columbia (CAMRT-BC) – Association for medical radiation technologists in BC. Delivers essential services like local events, networking opportunities, and provincial advocacy for causes important to the profession.
Disciplines
Medical radiation technologists in BC specialize in one of four disciplines, each supporting critical elements of patient care:
- Radiological technologists
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologists
- Nuclear medicine technologists
- Radiation therapists
Education and Certification
Canadian trained MRTs must complete a program in one of the four disciplines of medical radiation technology that has been accredited by Accreditation Canada and successfully write the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) entry-to-practice certification exam for their discipline.
Internationally Educated Medical Radiation Technologists (IEMRTs)
If you were educated and/or trained as an MRT outside of Canada, you must apply to the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) for an assessment to determine language proficiency, substantial similarity of qualifications, and work experience. You will be required to submit information for the assessment, which CAMRT will review to determine your eligibility to apply for CAMRT’s entry-to-practice certification exam in your discipline.
English Language Proficiency
Internationally educated MRTs that did not complete their education in English or French must provide proof they have passed a CAMRT approved English test.
Certification Exams
CAMRT entry-to-practice certification exams are competency-based exams with emphasis placed on the application of knowledge in the practice environment.
*Please Note: Magnetic Resonance is an advanced certification program and requires additional education and prior completion of an accredited program in Medical Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Radiation Therapy.
For more information, please visit the CAMRT website.
Once you complete the certification exam, you will receive a CAMRT certificate and be permitted to practice in BC.
